Hard Drives

What Is a Hard Drive? A hard drive is a storage device used to permanently store data on a computer, even when the power is turned off. A hard drive stores: Operating systems (Windows, Linux) Applications and programs Documents Photos and videos Music Games Think of a hard drive as the computer's long-term memory, while RAM is the computer's short-term memory. Types of Hard Drives 1. HDD (Hard Disk Drive) An HDD uses spinning magnetic disks (platters) to store data. Characteristics Mechanical moving parts Lower cost Larger storage capacity Slower than SSDs Common Capacities 500 GB 1 TB 2 TB 4 TB+ Advantages ✅ Inexpensive ✅ Large storage capacity Disadvantages ❌ Slower performance ❌ More prone to damage due to moving parts ❌ Generates more heat and noise 2. SSD (Solid State Drive) An SSD stores data using flash memory chips. Characteristics No moving parts Much faster than HDDs Lower power consumption More durable Advantages ✅ Fast boot times ✅ Fast file transfers ✅ Quiet operation ✅ Shock resistant Disadvantages ❌ More expensive per GB 3. SATA SSD A type of SSD that uses the SATA interface. Typical speed: Plain Text 500-600 MB/s Show more lines Example: Plain Text Samsung 870 EVO Crucial MX500 Show more lines 4. NVMe SSD A newer SSD that uses the PCIe bus instead of SATA. Typical speed: Plain Text 3,000-14,000 MB/s   Show more lines Example: Plain Text Samsung 990 Pro WD Black SN850X Show more lines Benefits Extremely fast Best for gaming Excellent for video editing Ideal for servers and workstations HDD vs SSD vs NVMe SSD Feature HDD SATA SSD NVMe SSDTechnology Magnetic disk Flash memory Flash memory Speed Slow Fast Very Fast Moving Parts Yes No No Noise Yes No No Durability Lower Higher Higher Cost Lowest Medium Highest Internal vs External Drives Internal Hard Drive Installed inside a computer. Examples: Laptop SSD Desktop HDD External Hard Drive Connects through USB. Examples: Backup drives Portable storage devices Enterprise and Server Drives SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) Often used in: Data centers Servers Enterprise storage Advantages: High reliability Better performance under heavy workloads SATA Enterprise Drives Used in: Small business servers Network storage devices (NAS) How Storage Is Measured Unit SizeKB 1,024 bytes MB 1,024 KB GB 1,024 MB TB 1,024 GB Example: Plain Text 1 TB ≈ 1,000 GB   Show more lines Cybersecurity Perspective Hard drives can contain sensitive information such as: Password databases Personal records Financial information Company data Security controls include: Full Disk Encryption (BitLocker) Backups Secure erasure Access controls Certification Exam Tip Remember: HDD = Mechanical, magnetic, slower, cheaper SSD = Flash memory, faster, no moving parts NVMe SSD = Fastest consumer storage SAS = Enterprise/server storage Easy Memory Trick Plain Text HDD → Cheap and Large SSD → Fast NVMe → Very Fast Show more lines For modern computers, NVMe SSDs are the preferred storage option because they provide the best performance and reliability.
