Motherboard
A motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer. It connects all the hardware components together and allows them to communicate with each other.
Think of the motherboard as the central highway system of a computer:
The CPU processes data.
The RAM stores active data.
The storage drive holds files.
The motherboard connects everything so they can work together.
Main Components of a Motherboard
1. CPU Socket
Holds the CPU (processor).
The socket type must match the CPU.
Examples: Intel LGA1700, AMD AM5.
2. RAM Slots (DIMM Slots)
Hold memory modules (RAM).
Most motherboards have 2 to 8 slots.
3. Chipset
Controls communication between the CPU, RAM, storage, and peripherals.
Modern examples:
Intel Z790, B760
AMD X670, B650
4. BIOS/UEFI Chip
Firmware that initializes hardware when the computer starts.
Performs the Power-On Self-Test (POST).
5. Expansion Slots (PCIe)
Used to install:
Graphics cards (GPU)
Network cards
Sound cards
Capture cards
6. Storage Connectors
Used to connect storage devices:
SATA ports for HDDs and SSDs
M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs
7. Power Connectors
Supply power from the power supply unit (PSU):
24-pin motherboard connector
4-pin, 8-pin, or 12-pin CPU power connector
8. USB Headers
Connect front-panel USB ports.
9. Front Panel Connectors
Connect:
Power button
Reset button
Power LED
Hard drive activity LED
10. Audio Connectors
Connect speakers, microphones, and front-panel audio ports.
11. Network Interface
Usually includes:
Ethernet port
Wi-Fi capability (on some models)
