Network Interface Card
Network Interface Card (NIC)
IA Network Interface Card (NIC) is a hardware component that allows a computer or other device to connect to a network, such as a Local Area Network (LAN) or the Internet.
Think of the NIC as the device's network adapter. Without it, the computer cannot send or receive data over a network.
What Does a NIC Do?
A NIC:
Connects a device to a network
Sends and receives network traffic
Converts data between the computer and the network medium
Provides a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address
How a NIC Works
The computer creates data.
The NIC converts the data into network signals.
The signals travel across a cable or wireless connection.
Another NIC receives the signals and converts them back into data.
Types of NICs
1. Wired NIC (Ethernet)
Uses an Ethernet cable (RJ-45 connector).
Example:
Plain Text
PC → Ethernet Cable → Switch → Router

Advantages:
Fast
Reliable
Low latency
Common speeds:
10 Mbps
100 Mbps
1 Gbps
10 Gbps+
2. Wireless NIC (Wi-Fi)
Connects to a wireless network using radio waves.
Examples:
Laptop Wi-Fi adapter
USB Wi-Fi adapter
Built-in wireless card
Advantages:
Mobility
No network cable required
NIC Components
A typical NIC contains:
Network controller chip
MAC address
Transmitter and receiver
Device drivers
Port or antenna
MAC Address and NIC
Every NIC has a unique MAC address.
Example:
Plain Text
00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E

The MAC address operates at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model.
NIC in the OSI Model
OSI Layer NIC FunctionLayer 1 (Physical) Sends and receives electrical, optical, or wireless signals
Layer 2 (Data Link) Uses MAC addresses for frame delivery
Examples of NICs
Ethernet card in a desktop PC
Wi-Fi adapter in a laptop
Network card in a server
USB-to-Ethernet adapter
Wireless adapter in a smartphone
How to View Your NIC in Windows
Open Command Prompt:
BAT
ipconfig /all
Show more lines
You'll see:
Adapter name
MAC address (Physical Address)
IPv4 address
IPv6 address
Gateway information

Remember:
NIC = Hardware that connects a device to a network
MAC Address = Assigned to the NIC
Operates at OSI Layers 1 and 2
Can be wired (Ethernet) or wireless (Wi-Fi)
Simple definition: A Network Interface Card (NIC) is a hardware device that enables a computer or other device to communicate on a network by sending and receiving data.
