Proxy Server

A Proxy Server is a computer or service that acts as an intermediary between a user's device and the internet. Instead of connecting directly to a website, your request goes through the proxy server first. How It Works Plain Text Your Computer | v Proxy Server | v Website You request a website. The request goes to the proxy server. The proxy server sends the request to the website. The website responds to the proxy server. The proxy server sends the response back to you. Why Organizations Use Proxy Servers 1. Security A proxy can hide internal IP addresses from the internet. Example: Attackers see the proxy's IP address instead of employees' computers. 2. Content Filtering Organizations can block certain websites. Examples: Social media sites Gambling sites Malicious websites 3. Monitoring and Logging Administrators can track internet usage. Example: Recording which websites users visit and when. 4. Performance Improvement (Caching) Frequently accessed web pages can be stored locally. Example: If 100 employees visit the same website, the proxy may serve a cached copy instead of downloading it each time. 5. Access Control Only authorized users can access certain internet resources. Types of Proxy Servers Forward Proxy The most common type. Represents the client Sits between users and the internet Plain Text Client --> Forward Proxy --> Internet Reverse Proxy Represents the web server. Protects web servers from direct internet access Used for load balancing and security Plain Text Internet --> Reverse Proxy --> Web Server Examples: NGINX HAProxy Cloudflare Proxy vs Firewall Proxy Server FirewallControls web traffic Controls network traffic Can filter websites Blocks unauthorized connections Often caches content Does not cache content Acts as intermediary Inspects and filters traffic Many organizations use both together. Proxy vs VPN Proxy VPNUsually protects specific applications Protects all device traffic Often does not encrypt traffic Encrypts traffic Faster but less secure More secure Real-World Example At a company, an employee tries to visit a malicious website. Request goes to the proxy server. Proxy checks the URL against a blocked-site list. The website is identified as malicious. Access is denied. The employee is protected before reaching the dangerous site.
