Twisted Pair Cables
CAT 5, 5e, 6, 7, 8 UTP/STP network cables
Twisted pair cable is the most common type of Ethernet network cable used to connect computers, switches, routers, access points, and other network devices.
The wires inside the cable are twisted together in pairs to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk.
A standard Ethernet cable contains:
8 copper wires
4 twisted pairs
RJ-45 connector

UTP vs STP
UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)
No additional shielding around the wires.
Advantages
Less expensive
Easier to install
Lightweight
Most common
Common Uses
Homes
Schools
Offices

STP (Shielded Twisted Pair)
Contains foil or braided shielding to protect against interference.
Advantages
Better EMI protection
Reduced crosstalk
Better for industrial environments
Common Uses
Factories
Hospitals
Data centers
Areas with lots of electrical equipment

The "e" stands for Enhanced because it improves crosstalk performance.
CAT6
Characteristics
Speed:
1 Gbps at 100 meters
10 Gbps up to 55 meters
Bandwidth: 250 MHz
Maximum Length: 100 meters
Uses
Business networks
New home installations
High-speed networking
Benefits:
Better insulation
Less interference
Better performance than CAT5e
CAT6a
(Category 6 Augmented)
Characteristics
Speed: 10 Gbps
Distance: Full 100 meters
Bandwidth: 500 MHz
Uses
Enterprise networks
Data centers
High-performance environments
CAT7
Characteristics
Speed: Up to 10 Gbps
Bandwidth: 600 MHz
Usually shielded (STP)
Uses
Data centers
Specialized installations
Features:
Better shielding
Reduced interference
Note: CAT7 is less common in enterprise environments than CAT6a and CAT8.
CAT8
The newest high-performance copper Ethernet cable.
Characteristics
Speed: 25 Gbps to 40 Gbps
Bandwidth: 2000 MHz (2 GHz)
Maximum Distance: 30 meters
Uses
Data centers
Server rooms
High-speed backbone connections

The RJ-45 connector contains 8 pins corresponding to the 8 wires inside the cable.
Network+ Exam Tips
Remember:
UTP = Most common Ethernet cable
STP = Better protection from interference
CAT5e = 1 Gbps
CAT6 = 10 Gbps up to 55 m
CAT6a = 10 Gbps up to 100 m
CAT8 = 25-40 Gbps up to 30 m
Maximum Ethernet cable length = 100 meters
Quick Memory Trick
Plain Text
CAT5e = 1 Gig
CAT6 = 10 Gig (shorter distance)
CAT6a = 10 Gig (full distance)
CAT8 = 40 Gig (data center)
