What is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, applications, and data from unauthorized access, attacks, damage, or theft. Simple Definition Cybersecurity helps keep information and technology systems confidential, accurate, and available. Real-World Example Imagine your online bank account: Your password protects access. The bank uses encryption to protect your data. Security systems detect hackers trying to break in. Backups help recover information if systems fail. All of these are part of cybersecurity. The Three Main Goals of Cybersecurity Known as the CIA Triad: Confidentiality Only authorized people can access information. Example: Password-protected medical records. Integrity Data remains accurate and unaltered. Example: Preventing someone from changing bank balances. Availability Systems and data are accessible when needed. Example: Keeping a company website online. Common Cyber Threats Malware: Viruses, worms, ransomware, spyware Phishing: Fake emails designed to steal information Social Engineering: Tricking people into revealing secrets DoS/DDoS Attacks: Flooding systems with traffic Password Attacks: Guessing or stealing passwords Insider Threats: Employees misusing access Common Cybersecurity Controls Control PurposeFirewall Filters network traffic Antivirus Detects malware Encryption Protects data Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Adds extra login security Backups Allows recovery from attacks Security Awareness Training Educates users Cybersecurity Domains Network Security: Protecting networks and devices Application Security: Securing software applications Cloud Security: Protecting cloud environments Endpoint Security: Securing laptops, desktops, and mobile devices Identity and Access Management (IAM): Managing user authentication and permissions Security Operations (SOC): Monitoring and responding to threats Hands-On Example Suppose an employee receives an email claiming to be from Microsoft asking them to click a link and enter their password. A cybersecurity professional would: Recognize it as a phishing attempt. Block the malicious sender. Warn other employees. Investigate whether anyone clicked the link. Implement additional protections if needed. CISSP-Style Definition Cybersecurity is the discipline of protecting information systems, networks, applications, and data from cyber threats while ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Cybersecurity = People + Processes + Technology working together to protect information and systems.
